About

Theories of leadership and management abound. In common vernacular, management is most commonly applied to things activities, processes, projects, functions, paperwork, etc. A distinction is sometimes applied to “leadership” as being more related to people-focused skills, such as collaboration and communication, in addition to strategy development. In engineering management, technology is part of both.

The American Society for Engineering Management defines engineering management as the art and science of planning, organizing, allocating resources, and directing and controlling activities which have a technological component. An engineering manager has the challenges and responsibilities of changing technology on top of the challenges of leadership and management.
